TECHNICAL TEXTILES AND NEW SMART MATERIALS

The variety of possible applications for smart materials and textiles make this a strategic topic for many sectors: sport, buildings, health, transport, civil engineering, worker safety, etc.

Tomorrow’s textiles will enable businesses and users to exploit new opportunities related to digital technologies and nanotechnologies while protecting them from cyber attacks and ensuring a high level of personal data protection. Account will also be taken of the ecological transition by developing the use of textile fibres and recycled or bio-based materials and by ensuring their recyclability, thereby adopting a circular economy approach.

Standardization can help stabilize and accelerate the industrialization of technical textiles and other devices integrated into garments and on the body by establishing a common terminology, developing test methods for the performance and resistance of these products and helping to establish a high level of safety. Normative work has already started, notably by IEC.
